A Review of Windows Defender

Microsoft’s built-in antivirus program known as Windows Security, doesn’t require the purchase of a subscription or installation, so it offers many benefits for free. The product is highly regarded by the top antivirus testing labs and provides strong malware protection without affecting system performance. It also comes with a few useful features, including ransomware protection and a password manager. However, it isn’t equipped with some essential features found in more premium antivirus suites, and isn’t among the most user-friendly options.
The virus and threat protection module provides quick scans, full scans and custom scans. It also has an offline scan mode that is designed to get rid of even the most difficult of threats. The firewall and network module is easy to use, but it’s not quite as comprehensive as competitors. The biggest drawback, however is that it’s only available on Windows devices, so if you’re looking to protect a Mac or Android phone, you’ll have to find another option.
Family options include parental controls and the possibility of monitoring the health of the devices in your family. There’s a password manager that is hidden in the Edge browser that can be synced to other devices. The drawback is that you can’t manage the features directly via the app, and must use a web browser to do so.
As opposed to many other antivirus programs, it doesn’t hook itself to the Windows kernel – a method that can open new attack areas for black hats and possibly compromise your operating system. Additionally, it provides an effective behavioural detection feature and prevents users from downloading malicious files.
